You Can't Scam Me, Sucka!

Filed in archive Identity Theft by Justin McHenry on July 19, 2006

I generally think I'm pretty savvy about not getting taken. I did caught in a mini pyramid scheme when I was 16, but infractions when you are a minorlinks are expunged from the record.

But I think I could get taken by this one, because it's a two-pronged scam designed to get you regardless of whether you're smart or stupid.

If I understand correctly, here's what happens: irrealhost.com sends a text message to your cell phone thanking you for signing up for its dating service that costs $2 per day. When you say, "No way" and go to the Web site, it gives you the option to cancel the service BUT when you press ther button to cancel, you're actually running a malicious program that chanes security settings on your computer and allows hackers to use it for their various nefarious purposes, such as spamming or other evil doings.

Be careful out there.
