This post at Wise Bread reminded me of a garage sale I once went to where the people were selling their kids' used underwear, (or "underpants" as my Mom says, a word I find disgusting).

At the time, I found the thought of buying a kid used underwear gross, and I haven't changed that opinion. In fact, having my own kids just reinforces it. I love my kids, they're cute and cuddly and say funny things, but on the hygiene tip-forget about it. Their idea of wiping their butts is sliding some toilet paper along the side of their thigh, and they're always wandering away from the toilet before the pee is done coming out. I would never consider selling their underwear to someone; in fact, I'm going to go burn a few pairs of them right now so there's no chance of my wife getting any smart ideas from this post.

Am I wrong about this? Is it a guy thing versus a girl thing? Are people snapping up OKU (Other Kids Underwear) at bargain prices to put on their own offspring? Does this idea disturb you as much as it disturbs me?

(BTW, above is a picture of fine new boys underwear from hanes, which you can buy 6 to a pack for $11. I know that doesn't compare to the 45 cents that same 6 pairs would cost you at a garage sale, but don't let your frugalness get the best of you!)

There are some things in life that should never be second hand. One of those is underwear, another is socks. The health issue and ‘gross-factor’ is extreme in both cases.

    Cheers

I don’t think it’s a guy v. girl thing. I’m a female and would NEVER buy used underwear. It’s disgusting!

i dont think its as bad as you make it. when i was a young boy, all of my clothes were hand me downs from the boy next door. he was two years older and his mom used to pack up everything that he couldnt fit into and give it to me. his shirts, pants, socks, shoes and underwear eventually became mine even though his name was written in everything. my first jock for baseball used to be his too, and i really didnt think anything of it to be honest. neither did my mother. who was single and and did the best she could to feed me. nowadays i only shop at thrift stores and get everything there second hand for next to nothing. i buy used underwear too when it is in my size because honestly i think $12 for 3 pairs of small mens underwear is a rip off when i can get 24 pairs for the same price. im no miser, either… this sort of thing doesnt bother me. like my mother always said, “god made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt!”

It is a really funny topic. I mean that everyone think that the rest of human beings are dirtier than himself or herself. Although I have never bought second hand underwear I would not mind to buy some one day. I like what Dustin’s mum said: God made dirt and dirt don’t hurt. Wise words.

I gotta be on the same boat with Dustin, I’ve bought underwear at thrift stores before, not cuz I’m cheap but because I happened to like a certain style they had there, and for only a buck fifty. I agree that paying 12 bucks for three pairs is a rip off and some stores even dare to charge over $20 FOR ONE PAIR!!! If you’re disgusted about it being dirty, which I’m sure they’re not when they’re sold, there is such a thing as hot water and soap.

in fairness, we all have the parts, so why not used underwear! With the cost of one pair of ‘designer’ being £20 – £30, and childrens packs not cheep, i dont see it as an issue, i had a few neighbours who had boys older than me, and i got there pants after them, once one had a bit of a ‘boy’ stain, but after a wash it was fine!!
