Will You Still Need Me When I'm 64?

My wife and I spend a lot of time thinking about our kids. In fact, I can't really think of anything else we think about, which explains why we're lost for words when we go out on "dates" and call a moratorium on kid talk.

Nevertheless, I don't plan on spending every waking hour thinking about these kids when they've grown up. I'd like a bit of my life (and my brain) back.

Then I read this article that says 46 percent of 60+ adults are still helping their adult children financially.

Sorry, kids. Mom and I are ponying up for your college, which I hear will cost half a billion dollars by the time you get there, then you're on your own. If by some chance we have 17 million left over, we'll slip you a thousand here or there on special occasions.

Yes, you can live with us for a little while until you get your first job, but then it's time for your first apartment, know what I'm saying?

Your mother's a softer touch, but don't even think about using the "Dad says no, go ask Mom" strategy. By then I'll have been working on her for 15-20 years–she's on my side.

You might still need me when I'm 64, but I'll be in the Bahamas. In a small hut with room for just two. Maybe I'll send you a plane ticket so you can visit.
