Tips for Sticking to the Family Budget

When you are trying hard to maintain your budget and live within it, there will always be things that will come up that will put your determination to the test. If you let it, this can cause a meltdown of your finances rather quickly – especially if there is not a lot of leeway. Remember that the first thing to go when you go over budget will usually be the savings account money, and that means that it will be affecting you later on, when you will need the money the most.

One way to ensure that you still save money as originally planned, according to Sarah Siddons, is to have it deposited automatically into a savings account or a mutual fund. This account will be very valuable to you around the time you retire, or if you should need some emergency funds.

Another way to stay on budget is to always use cash. Sticking to cash payments will help you also see how much money is left in that budget category, too. You will need to create an envelope system and put that week's cash into it at the start of every week. As long as you pay cash only, then you also avoid using the credit card and building up any balances with interest.

Remember that if you have children, to be sure to keep a little extra money available for special things for them – on occasion. And don't forget to teach them how to use and save money, too, as soon as they are old enough.

Switching to a cash only system (using envelopes) has really helped me in sticking to my food and gas budget. I check my envelope. If the money isn’t there, then I am eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at home! :)
