There isn't a good daily newspaper in my neighborhood. Let me see if I can explain how rural my area is. It takes me about half an hour to get to the closest Wal-mart, an hour and 15 minutes to get to the closest target, and about 90 minutes to get to an Olive Garden (my favorite Italian restaurant).

Part of my problem is that I don't really want a daily paper that tells me what goes on around here. Imagine the headlines: Mayor Shmortz arrested again for public intoxication, high school wrestling team wins third state championship, volunteer fire department to hold spaghetti dinner fund raiser, cattle prices hit new low… (Yawn).

I'm fortunate enough to have lived a few places. What I really wanted was to get up of the mornings a read a relative fresh copy of something like the South China Morning Post from Hong Kong, of the Strait Times of Singapore. Eventually I realized that there were services (like Subscription.com) that took most of the hassle out of getting papers like that delivered. So now I get both of those papers, along with the Times of India, too.

There a big old world out there – and there's more to life than the mayor's drinking habits.
