Start Saving Money on Heating This Winter
Filed in archive Saving on January 30, 2009
Hopefully by now you have already taken some steps to save money on your heating bills. If you haven't, it is not too late to do something now. Heating bills can really get out of hand - if you do nothing.
If you live in the northern states, then you know how cold it can get - and how high your heating bills can be. With the weather being considerably colder this winter, you want to be sure that the heat stays on - but within reason. Here are some tips to help you save money on your heating bills starting now.

1. Regulate the thermostat.
This little tip can save money all by itself. Money gets saved as soon as you lower the temperature a degree or two. At night, you can bring it even lower to around 65 degrees or so (lower is even better - try 55-60). Being in bed at night and with plenty of blankets, you probably won't even notice any difference. If you have an automatic thermostat you can set it to raise the temperature to normal about 30 minutes before you get up. Don't forget you can always add a sweater if you start feeling cold.
2. Seal the cracks.
You can have gaps around door frames or windows - especially if you live in an older house. These gaps cause drafts and heat loss. Close them up with weather-stripping and plastic and you will save money.
3. Insulate.
Older houses may not have enough insulation in the walls or attic. Find out the thickness you need and have it put in. You will notice the difference immediately. You also can have the electric company come out and give you an evaluation of what you can do to reduce heating costs and save money.
4. Keep your curtains closed when the sun is not shining.
Curtains act as more insulation when they are closed. Keeping them that way at night and when the sun is not shining will cut down on cold drafts - meaning your heater will not turn on so often. Open them up when the sun is shining, though, and let the sun's rays bring in some free heat.

Great advice you have there. May I also suggest that you can also paint your house in darker colours if you are the type that needs alot of heat. My neighbour did that and the house looks like one of those artsy fartsy houses now and is almost always hot inside if the sun is shining.
