When you are tight on money and really cannot afford the long vacations away from home, why not save money by staying closer to home. Instead of paying large hotel and restaurant bills, you can take a discount vacation and save money by staying closer to home and taking a series of day trips with the kids. Or, you could also take a short trip for a couple of days, come back home and take a few day trips, too.
If you are taking a vacation mainly for the kids, remember that kids do not have to have the high cost attached in order to have fun. They are just as well pleased simply to do something different and to be kept busy.
Places like state parks offer many opportunities for activities. This can include hiking, biking, swimming, boating or canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, or just sightseeing. Some parks also offer museums, tours of historic places, interactive exhibits and possibly educational lectures.
For a good balance, you may want to have some visits to a place that costs, mixed with other visits that do not. You know your own budget. You do not have to go every day, either. You can save money by taking a picnic lunch, too.
