Making sure that you stay on budget is easier to do if you have some extra money each month to allow some give and take. This is especially true if you are not used to having a budget, because you will go over sometimes or have unexpected expenses come up. Still, you can save money in a few different ways – here are a couple of them.

Pay above the Minimum on Credit Cards

Each credit card you have has a minimum payment that you are expected to pay. If you only pay that amount each month, then you may have a little more Cash each month, but you are also paying a lot more in interest than you need to. Also, by paying more each month and not charging anything new, you will pay off the debt sooner – and save a considerable amount of money. This principle also applies to loans, too.

Eliminate Bad Habits

The cost of cigarettes and alcohol is high, and you already know that neither one is good for you. If you have a regular habit of either one, then you are putting out a lot of money that would be better put elsewhere – like a savings account or toward reducing your debt. In addition, you can lower your health insurance costs, too, because they increase rates for these things.

Start Using Cash

While paying with plastic may be a lot easier, you will certainly think twice if you have to pay cash for everything you buy. It will help you understand that there are limits – and you may have to say "No" more often if you do not have that much cash with you. In addition, you will also know that there is only so much cash available for the week.

Save Money by Using Generic Drugs

One more way to save money is to buy the less expensive generic drugs. By law, they have to contain the same ingredients as the original – but are a whole lot cheaper. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist the next time you buy. Saving money this way can allow you to keep a lot more in your wallet.

Budgeting money is just another way of determining what is most important, and then bringing it under your control – not vice versa.
