Quicken 2007 Debuts to Mixed Reviews

If you are serious about keeping your personal finances in order, there's a good chance you're using Quicken to keep it all straight. Quicken 2007 debuted today and, depending on who you believe, it's either the greatest thing since the iPod or an update for the sake of an update.

PC Magazine loves it:

The new home page is better than anything Microsoft has done with Money, and it's Intuit's best effort yet. Add features such as the built-in ability to scan documents, an improved calendar, a better setup and update process, and dozens of smaller enhancements, and you've got a powerhouse upgrade that everyone should spring for. It's not just the best personal-finance product this year, it's the best ever.

PC Mag raves about the new personal home page giving just the right amount of info for your basics needs. One new feature they mention that sounds pretty neat is the ability to scan documents like canceled checks, receipts, etc. and match them up with their appropriate transactions.

On the other hand, PC World not quite as excited when discussing both Quicken and the upcoming Microsoft Money edition:

Don't get me wrong–I use personal finance software and wouldn't do without it. But it's pretty underwhelming when the main reason you'd advise someone to upgrade is to maintain the support for online services that both Microsoft and Intuit withdraw from users of older versions of their products.

I'm not organized enough to use anything but the barest bones personal finance software. (I'm still on Quicken 2003 and I use it about as knowledgably as your average caveman. Hmmm, I saw a commercial recently advising against dissing cavemen.) But if you really like to master your financial picture, it sounds like the new Quicken might be worth your while.

Quicken 2007 has some great features that really simplify Quicken, so you might want to consider an upgrade from Quicken 2003. Read more about Quicken 2007 features at http://financialsoft.about.com/od/quickenreviews/a/Q07BestFeatures.htm.

Features are nice but worthless if the software is unreliable. It’s too bad PC Mag didn’t use Quicken for at least a little while – they would have discovered how buggy it really is. Dowenloaded transactions that dissapear; splits that can’t be viewed or editied, and recurrign transactions that don’t work. Don’t buy this crap.
