"Try alternate sources of information. This made the biggest difference for us out of all the tips here. It can be fast and easy to use Travelocity or its competitors to find a place to stay, but you'll pay for it-especially if you're looking for something other than a hotel."

Tired But Happy--sometimes it's not about the money:

"If you want to know why I'm grumpy, you should try slamming your toddler's thumb in a car door. After that, you should try running into an old high school boyfriend while you're wearing baggy jeans, an old T-shirt, and looking flustered because your toddler just kicked your glasses off your head and under the table in a dimly lit restaurant. Oh, and you're at said restaurant with both of your parents, even though they divorced over a decade ago. And your old boyfriend STILL wears too much cologne and too much hair product, leading you to wonder for the fiftieth time what you were thinking dating him in the first place. Which of course doesn't diminish your desire to look fabulous when you run into him."
