One thing that will really help a home to absorb heat is the outside color of your home. The darker the color of the outside the more heat that your house will absorb. If you want to lower the cost of your air conditioning over the summer months then you need to have a lighter color. A darker color is better for the winter months.
Obviously, you can't paint your home every few months, so you may want to use a color that is neither real dark nor real light. A medium color would be a better choice.
In some states, law requires that new homes have white roofs. California now requires this, and so do a few others. The reason is to help reflect the heat back into the atmosphere to lower the effect of global warming. A white roof will help you to save money on your cooling costs in the summer months, but won't help warm your home in the winter. If you live in the more southern states, this will not be that large of a concern.
Good insulation will also be needed to keep the heat out of your living spaces in the summer. If you have good insulation in your walls and attic then it will help reduce your electric bill and live more frugal. An attic fan may help keep the airspace cooler – especially when the outside air is lower than the attic air temperature.
