Mistakes in Budget Planning to Avoid
Filed in archive Saving on March 5, 2010
Planning a budget carefully is necessary to keep it going - and make it effective for the family finances. When mistakes are made, either in the planning process, or in the thinking behind the budget, it can cause a premature breakdown of the reason for budgeting in the first place.
A common mistake is that people often have the wrong concept of what a budget is, says Michael Eisenberg, who is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' financial literacy commission. He prefers to use the term "cash flow" because it presents a more neutral idea. He knows that many people look at a budget like being a restriction, which it really is not.
A budget is merely a tool that enables people to have greater control over their money, and also a greater opportunity to put more away into savings accounts for greater purposes rather than simply wasting it away on trivial things. It really is an empowerment to something better - like saving money. When seen in that light, or as a "cash flow," people should not have a problem with it.
