Looking for a Raise in 2009? Don't Hold Your Breath...

Filed in archive Economy on December 23, 2008

MarketWatch ran a story last week on pay raises for 2009. According to a survey conducted by Hewitt Associates, a human-resources consulting firm, the average pay raise in 2009 will be less the 3%. And that's the lowest in 32 years.

According to the survey, about half of all US companies have already decided to alter heir plans for employee raises in 2009. Another 25% are considering such changes.
At those companies, salary hikes will average 2.2% for executives, 2.5% for salaried exempt (those who are exempt from overtime pay), 2.6% for salaried nonexempt workers, and about 2.5% for nonunion hourly employees.
If you get a pay raise this year, it could be, well, peanuts...

You can read MarketWatch's fairly lengthy analysis of the report by Hewitt Associates here.
