Budgeting Mistake - Not Writing Your Budget Expenses Down

The value of a family budget is only as good as the records you keep. When items are left off – for whatever reason – it throws off the budget and makes it impossible to know accurately just how much is left in that category.

Once the budget plan starts to fail, money will get spent on the wrong things, and the possibility of greater debt occurs. Frugal living starts to go out the window. Even worse, it could make bills late, and then there may be other fees or interest added unnecessarily. This will make it hard to save money.

To avoid these problems, Amy Fontinelle of Investopedia.com, says that "The best way to remember everything you buy is to update your budget each night before you go to bed while your purchases are still fresh in your head. You could also carry around a small notebook so you can jot down your purchases throughout the day as you make them, or make all your purchases with the same debit or credit card (effectively having someone else create the spending list for you)."

If you are new to having a budget, it may take a little while before it becomes a practice of recording everything. Although it will take a little time to make the necessary adjustments, you will find that a household budget will permit better financial control over the long run, enabling you to save money better than before.

  1. One of the most important steps in making a budget is writing it down. Therefore, a budget which is not written down stands on very shaky foundation.
